Zenonia 2: The Lost Memories Review (App Store)
The original Zenonia was one of the first games on the iPhone to show more traditional games with some depth could be done on the platform. Zenonia 2: The Lost Memories builds upon its predecessor and in most cases, improves upon it. An action RPG in the vein of 16-bit classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and throws in dungeon-crawling elements like leveling up, working skill trees, equipping new armor and even item crafting. Zenonia 2 follows the story of four adventurers representing four different classes the player can select to reclaim lost memories by the way of recollecting lost gems. Truth be told, the story isn’t remarkable and if anything, the cut scenes drag the experience down. Thankfully, they can be skipped. The increased focus on narrative, though, has seemingly made the game feel more linear. Areas feel smaller and more claustrophobic than those found in Zenonia. The touch screen controls work as well can be expected (and the rest depends on your preference for touch screen controls), and can easily be moved around, resized and even made increasingly transparent or opaque. New in Zenonia is online Player Vs Player combat, or PvP. Registering an account name and hoping onto the network to fight against other player is easy, and while the battles are on the simple side, they are also quite fun. Players can also exchange messages and items over the network. Zenonia 2 has a few spelling and grammar mistakes in dialog, likely mistranslations …

I’m not much of an RPG fan but I got the first Zenonia and fell in love with it. I’ll be checking this one out once I’m done with the first. Great review!

That looks pretty fun! I have an iPod touch, but I don’t have an iTunes account registered, so I should probably do that at some point.

Thanks for this. I was looking to get it, but needed a reliable review source. You are a very trusted member of the video game community and have lots of integrity. I know I’m laying it on thick, but keep up the great videos.

@danman55555 The closest thing on the DS is probably Soma Bringer, which is an import (and I did a review for it). In North America, I can’t think of anything that’s completely like Zenonia, but Children of Mana, Summon Night: Twin Age, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time aren’t too far off.

@finngamer I would definitely double dip if the Zenonia games came out for the DS! They’re worth it.

I don’t have an iPhone/iPod Touch, so I wasn’t too interested in this game. But then I saw some gameplay here, and it looks like my kind of RPG. Any RPGs like this on the DS/PSP?
